Elena’s New Freedom

At 26 years old, Elena received her first wheelchair, with this wheelchair she hopes that she can fulfil her dream of finally attending school. Her story reminds us why we do this work every single day. For most of her life, Elena felt unseen. Born with a disability in a remote village, she was unable to walk, and rough roads made her getting around nearly impossible — not to mention, unsafe. Most days, she remained indoors; when she did go out, the stigma she faced from others was painful, leaving her discouraged and often feeling isolated.

Everything changed the day she received a brand-new wheelchair from WWF. "I can now move independently, participate in activities around the house, and socialize with others," Elena shared. Her joy in that moment was emotional. "Life has been hard," she confessed, "and is still hard, but I keep on going."

Without mobility, Elena would often be confined to her home, which was frustrating for this radiant, optimistic young woman. Despite the many challenges she has endured, Elena is determined to "get out into the world and show people who I am."
